Hundreds of hatchlings have started their new life, headed out into the wide world from Woorim Beach on Bribie Island.
Volunteers head out before dawn to check for nests that have opened, hatchlings that are struggling, and those that are still alive but stuck in the nest.
We help them get closer to the water, but make sure they can find their own way to the ocean (and more importantly, find their way back when it’s their turn to lay).
How can you help?
- Switch off your outside lights at night so hatchlings don’t get distracted.
- Keep the beach clean, take your rubbish with you.
- If you must drive on the beach, be “hatchling aware”.
- Stay on the right track and always se the authorised beach access to reach the ocean to protect turtle nesting habitat.
- Don’t touch nests or hatchlings – talk to our volunteers if you’re concerned about safety.
